How it Works

This is the standard maternity nurse service whereby I come to work with you in your own home at any point after your baby is born, either in the first few days or any time down the line.

This can be for 24 hours a day, or for a 12 hour day, for up to 5 days a week, bookings can be for any number of days up to a maximum of 2 weeks at a time, but if you feel you would benefit from further support extra days can be arranged.

For example, you might book five days of 24hrs to give you time to recover from the birth, followed by five days of 12hrs to help you learn and boost your confidence.

You might book two weeks of 12hr days to help establish feeding and routine, followed by 4 weeks of one 12hr days per week to support you and help deal with any problems you might encounter.

You could book three 24hr days to get you settled, then decide to book a further day or two because you feel you need a bit more support.

These 12 and 24hr day options could also be useful in a respite situation when you have become overtired or stressed and need a few days rest, or if you, or your family have been ill, or are coping with injury or PND, or if you just have a busy time for any reason.

You could even book a number of days and then take them whenever you most feel you need them (subject to availability and to be taken within 8 weeks of original booking).

Quite literally, you can use the 12 and 24hr days to create your own bespoke package that suit your individual needs, just get in touch.

What You Get

My time with you is focussed on caring for you and your baby, and preparing you to be a confident and competent parent as soon as possible.

If working 24hrs I come and stay with you in your home, so will require a bed either in the nursery or in a spare room (I’m afraid my back doesn’t like futons or sofa beds) and if working a 12hr day I come daily at mutually arranged times.

Before I arrive we will have a discussion about your chosen feeding/parenting methods, and if you are uncertain about anything I will offer you unbiased, non judgemental advice and suggestions to help you decide what might be right for you.#

Whilst with you I am there to help with all baby/parenting related issues so we will work on any worries or concerns you have regarding your baby, your family, and, equally importantly, yourself/selves.

I never come in and take over, I will do as much or as little as you want so whether you want to do it mostly yourself with me as a back up, or you want to rest as much as possible, I will take my lead from you.

I understand how precious sleep is for new parents so I will do my best to ensure you get as much rest as possible. If I am working 12hr days I will make sure you get chance to sleep between feeds, and if working 24hrs can have baby in the room with me and either do the night time bottle feeds, or bring baby to mum for breastfeeds, but do the winding and re settling myself to maximise your own opportunity for sleep.

I help you establish whichever feeding method you have chosen, and will guide and support you to the best of my ability, sharing tricks and tips I have learnt over the last 25 years. I don’t believe any feeding method is better than any other, and am very experienced in supporting breastfeeding, formula feeding, exclusive pumping and combination feeding. I am responsible for cleaning and sterilising any pumping/bottles/breastfeeding equipment and ensuring everything is always ready for the next feed.

I am happy to make light snacks and drinks for mum but you really don’t want me cooking for you …honest !
I ensure surfaces in nursery and kitchen are kept clean, along with all baby clothes/bedding/muslins etc so you are free to relax and enjoy your baby/rest/deal with siblings etc.

I am not responsible for the day to day care of older siblings, but will always do my best to help them accept and adapt to the new baby, and am used to coping with extreme reactions and ensuring a healthy integration.

I love animals too, and can also help them adjust to the new baby in safe and stress free way.

Together we will form a team and will work through every aspect of your life with your new baby and I will help you learn to feed, wind, handle, carry, bathe, swaddle and soothe your baby.

We will also work out a routine that suits you and your lifestyle at the same time as meeting all babies emotional and physical needs, having first spent time getting to know your baby’s character and temperament so you know exactly who he or she is.

We can think about anything you find worrying or stressful, and work through it together so, for example, if you are not comfortable breastfeeding in public we will practise at home, then try a feed in a very quiet place, then graduate to more busy places until you are completely confident.

I will teach you how to establish clear sleep signals that you can use to help your baby sleep well from birth, how to encourage self soothing, how to deal with disturbances to sleep patterns e.g.illness, holidays, growth spurts, and how to plan ahead for the next stages of your baby’s sleep habits.

I can show you how to use comfort aids such as swaddle, dummies, music, white noise, cuddles/rocking/patting in a way that enables them to become useful tools rather than nuisance addictions, I am also very experienced at gently retraining babies that have already become overly reliant on them.
Included with every booking is a copy of my book ‘The Baby Detective’ and a coaching session that talks you through my unique A.I.M investigative process of problem solving and we will practise applying this to some of the every-day problems we encounter with baby until you are a confident and efficient ‘baby detective’ yourself.

I understand how physically stressful and tiring life can be with a newborn , and how overwhelming it can be emotionally as well, so I am always there as a friend for both parents to talk to about absolutely anything that you need to express or work through…no fear or worry is ever dismissed.

Loco Parentis

If, for whatever reason, you want or need to go away without your baby you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing your baby is being expertly cared for in the safety and familiarity of their own home.

We will have an initial phone or Skype call, followed by face to face meeting during which we would discuss all aspects of your baby’s needs and your parenting preferences which will be respected at all times during your absence.

If you wish me to work on any aspects of baby’s behaviour during your absence such as tweaking routines, weaning, sleep training etc we will discuss this and notes will be taken and mutually agreed to ensure I do everything as you wish.

We will discuss your preferred option for handover period, usually from 1 hour to 24 hrs during which time you can introduce me to your baby and tell me as much about them as possible.
In an emergency situation I am experienced in immediate handover, even collecting baby from hospital if parent is ill or injured. I am very used to coping with a new baby in these circumstances and will do my best to follow instructions via phone or Skype.

If hospitalised parents want baby to visit I will accommodate that and, if mother is breastfeeding I will do all in my power to help her continue if that is her wish.

Whilst you are away I will take care of the house, plants and small pets as if they were my own (but cannot be responsible for dog walking) and will ensure house is secure.

I know how hard it can be for parents to be away from their children so contact can be made whenever you want via phone, Skype or Facetime, and also to accommodate visits from/with relatives and grandparents.
